This is a MAGNIFICENT pair of custom Victorian- Edwardian English in a rare but wearable size 7 1/2 wide! These MUSEUM QUALITY party shoes were made by a master cobbler with an Oriental motif of "Arts and Crafts" style satin stitched embroidered flowers. The lady I purchased these from believed them to be from the 1860's, but there are left and right feet. (My personal opinion is that this pair dates around the Edwardian Titanic era c. 1912- 1914) (I think she was confused by the hand work, brass nails, and unusual, curvy but wide, substantial, hand sanded heels.) They were purchased in England, but I believe they were probably originally purchased on a trip to the Orient on a world tour. The Edwardians loved Oriental motifs.
Nearly untouched by time, these stunning shoes are a shining, medium blue-green silk satin (heavy weight momie) shell, with heavy embroidered pink flowers and leaves. There are beaded, pleated silk tissue bows of pink and yellow on each shoe, with great double crisscrossing tops and handmade brown buttons. (Wow!) The heels are hand carved, and hand sanded, glazed, with brass nails in the heel. The soles are very thick, dark quality glazed leather. They look to be worn only once. Since they are very hardy, they could actually be worn now. The inners appear to be some sort of slightly hard, thick bark or tanned leather! (Made this way.) Very unusual, very high quality and beautiful.
Condition:
I consider these gorgeous shoes strong and hardy enough for wearing. They have very few problems, but since I'm picky, they sound a bit more involved than they actually are.
The blue green satin shell is very strong, and I find no burs or silk weakness. Embroidery is all there, vibrant and strong- one shoe toward the heel there is a few tiny maker's pen marks where they were going to put part of the design (you can see a bit of this pen near a few of the designs. Not distracting maker's mark.). Silk tissue bows are hardy. Perhaps missing up to one bead on each bow. The canvas inners are perfect, and the inner liner has the imperfections of bark or tanned leather- no breaking down. On the body attached to the sole, you can see fine bits of tissue paper peeking under the silk where the sole was attached- not a flaw- just the maker's materials. The sole and heels have a few glaze cracks (all very superficial to the surface, not structure), and of course, the very light sole wear. I know you won't be disappointed!
