What a magical needlepoint! The beautiful 1895 Victorian lady Gibson Girl is gorgeous- very like the ladies Charles Dana Gibson drew during this period. Her soft sweet blue-eyed gaze and Mona Lisa smile, riveting. She resembles to me the beauties featured in old Coca-Cola ads. Both my husband and I couldn't take our eyes off her when we first saw her. Other people obviously agreed... she was entered into the Napa State Fair in 1986, and won First place. (I have written the maker's initials and the name of the fair on the back. She is now retired and wanted to maintain privacy, so we agreed not to use her full name. She did however include the 1st Place ribbon, which we taped on the back.) You will not see a needlepoint like her again.
The needlepoint is a masterfully executed, completely custom piece- the fabric underneath is cotton and the main threads used are silk, but the hat and violet purple bow thread is a velvet pile! I have no idea how she did this effect, but, it looks truly fantastic.
The Gibson Girl is turned slightly, an area of bare space to the top and side of her so the portrait is purposefully slightly off-center for a pleasing portrait. The background is a very soft pale seafoam green, her 1890's gown with leg of mutton sleeves, old gold. The lovely lady's hat is brown velvet thread with large blooms of cream and a fushia- rose hat scarf is tied, and flows elegantly across one shoulder. Her skin is completed in soft cream and rose tones, eyes in light blues, hair in blondish-brown. The frame is painted soft gold wood with a paper back. This would be magnificent hanging in a Victorian home, Vintage Clothing business, and many other uses.
Condition:
Excellent condition. The frame has a few minor things to mention... faint darkish smudges dating back to the handling at the fair, there's a few minor and tiny marks, plus a few very small amount of pinhead sized holes from handling and hanging at the fair. There is hanging hardware already attached. The frame and needlepoint are light (thankfully) so shipping shouldn't be overmuch for this beauty, even considering the unusual but wonderful large size.
Price is: $275
