This is one of the PRETTIEST 1899- 1900 late Victorian or early Edwardian Wedding corsets I've ever had the opportunity to run across!!! It has a rarely seen snap open bust- a real must have. Friends who have seen this "American Lady" Corset in person gasp and say, "Look at that WAIST!!!" Seeing that it is a very dainty size waist, and was originally made for summer wedding wear as it is a single layer of thin, white coutil twill canvas with no waist expansion (or retraction) side panels make this wonderful corset a near impossibility to be a vintage maternity corset or nursing corset. I think the opening bust was supposed to be a
I estimate the date of this corset to be set around c. 1898-1900, showing the very early Edwardian corset new styling of the prevailing hourglass silhouette becoming flat-fronted, flattening the abdomen and pushing out the rear when tightlaced. The fine, strong stays are a multitude of groupings of 3 thin metal bones (9 each side, 18 total) with 2 large metal bones (2 on each side, 4 total, not including bones on each the busc and eyelet areas.) with bias-cut curved side waist panels to help form the new front waist flattening.
Heavy metal busc opening, metal eyelets for the corset adjustment ties, self-fabric lined metal stamped, "USA" bust opening snaps, reaches across front to uplifting half bust. Inner tape to assist with corset waist shifting when the lady would sit or stand. Self-fabric "Skirting" found under the bones that help makes the corset when shifted, not rise above petticoats or skirt. Original "So-Lo" elastic garters with working rubber adjusters.
Cluny lace edgings and lace "beading" contains ivory satin, double-faced ribbon trim. Matching ivory satin double-faced ribbon corset lacing tie adjuster. Stamped faintly inside corset in gray-tan," American Lady." "188" (style number.) "Boned with Rustino- guaranteed not to rust." (And amazingly, this claim really did work!)
Although this lovely wedding corset in theory could be very gently worn, I believe wearing this item should be avoided due to the unusual styling, and being a good early American designer item. Correct lacing should be up to 4" open behind and laced down a few inches. Would be a fabulous display- everyone who sees is nearly always fascinated with this terrific wedding corset.
Condition:
This corset is in very good condition considering the age- well over 100 years old. Fabric is generally strong overall, and would be stunning as a display. I believe the cluny lace edging (c.1900) and the vintage dual-face satin was added at a later time (from before I purchased it.) but it is so pretty I didn't feel it detracted so I didn't remove any of it. Presents an almost pristine appearance. A few extremely minor pindot sized soil spots at a few boned edges. A few tiny, undistracting vintage mends at a couple of boning edges where boning had attmpted to come through. At busc snaps each "hook and eye" has a very minor amount of normally found fabric wear. Some of the white paint on the eyelets has softly worn away showing the metal during a careful washing a long time ago in it's past. Snaps have a minor amount of age-related oxidation- nothing obvious or distracting. A bone is trying to work it's way out of the fabric- tiny area, easily fixed. All the garters have very faint, tiny rust colored discoloration and have some blackish, surface soil spots. Might be able to be brushed away. Due to the age and minor concerns, this item is sold "ASIS" "AS FOUND."
