This is a stunning, and most unusual Victorian spoon bonnet of woven shiny horsehair, netting, silver and black silk taffeta and silk velvet bows, trimmed with a WONDERFUL vibrant and huge silver silk-satin Chrysanthemum! This absolutely stunning hat was made in the height of frivolous hat wear, worn in 1885-1895. The wired horsehair crown is round and worn toward the back of the head, as in the spoon style. The bonnet has black silk netting and the silver silk-satin Chrysanthemum on the top front. This handmade bonnet very decadent with all the fabrics and materials used in the era. Long, lush silk velvet ties tie prettily under the chin. There's a black silk tissue bun holder on the inside. This stylish bonnet was definitely the most beautifully decorated head wear in her hatboxes.
Condition:
I consider this bonnet strong enough for wearing, but I could also see it in a serious collection or museum due to the rarity of the style, colors and materials used. The horsehair, silk taffetas, silk velvets, and Chrysanthemum are strong and supple, but the silk netting should eventually be replaced, or at least covered with lace trimming so it doesn't deteriorate further. The silk bunholder is strong but discolored at the top where skin had lightly touched it.
