Miss Brendas Victorian style Clothiers
My name is Brenda, and I have been sewing for 30-plus years with my passion lying in creating Victorian clothing. I would love the opportunity to sew a Gothic style dress for you! Here is an straightforward and accurate assessment of how the perfect Gotyhic style Victorian gown could be made for you!
First: I would need a pattern, or a picture (Victorian Fashion Plate, Painting copy, photo, drawing, etc.) of what you have in mind. Whether or not a pattern is readily available, or a Victorian pattern needs to be drafted from scratch has a big influence on making time frame, and of course, cost. Completely custom patterns can take some time to draft.
Also, the type of dress you choose, like a completely authentic Gothic SASS Victorian Reproduction, or a Gothic prom Victorian style dress with Victorian elements such as a corset lace up tie element. A formal or informal gown determines wether the gown would be used for indoor wear, like for a Gothic Victorian tea gown, Gothic Victorian Wedding Gown, or an outdoor Gothic Victorian walking and traveling dress, or grand Gothic Victorian Reception gown Costume, or even Gothic Victorian ball gowns for dances.
These choices will also influence which measurements are needed. For instance, a Gothic Victorian Walking Dress with a round sweep skirt that does not trail the ground would take different measurements than a Gothic Victorian Reception gown with a 3' long train. Measurements should be taken with undergarments to be used such as a Victorian corset, petticoats or bra. It should be noted, I do not build Victorian corsets. There are styles of dresses with boned bodices that do not necessarily need a corset worn under them such as Victorian style prom gowns (sometimes a pushup bra works just fine). If there is a corset needed, your measurements would then need to taken carefully with your corset on.
Next, the type of fabric that you would desire to see your dream dress made of...silk, cotton, velvet, taffeta, wool or something else? Fabric choice also influences the overall costs plus the time frame- does the fabric have to be special ordered? How long does that take? Silk and velvet gowns or items with more than one type of fabric, are going to be more "pricey" than a polyester blend taffeta, rows of Victorian pleats take extra time, etc., etc. What types of trim are you thinking of incorporating in your gown? Often the "trim" and/ or lace of the gown is what makes it truly "Victorian."
Will your gown require a crinoline, or a certain type of petticoat, or possibly a "bustle" pad or a "hip roll" to complete your look?
Condition:
All of these factors need to be considered in order to give an honest and more accurate time frame and "cost." Normally, if the fabric is readily available and drafting the pattern is fairly simple, it usually takes me approximately two weeks from start to completion.
I hope I have answered your questions (and have probably initiated other questions!) Please feel comfortable contacting me with any other thoughts, ideas or concerns. I look forward to working with you to build you the beautiful, memorable, one-of-a-kind Victorian Costume especially for your needs, Miss Brenda
