Miss Brendas Victorian style Clothiers
Lovely 1886 Victorian bustle dress costume reproduction, a beautiful Victorian representation of a Scottish or Irish heritage. The materials used here are a hunter green velvet, blue and green plaid pinwale corduroy as correctly used in the Victorian era; plus teal, crepe-back satin.
A bit of history on the use of Corduroy during the Victorian era:
Corduroy first became popular in France and England in the 1700s, where it was named corde du roi, or "cord of the king." Though it was first woven of silk and was used to make clothing for royal servants, many think that the name corde du roi was actually made up by a British manufacturer who wished to glamorize his fabric with celebrity appeal. By the late 1800s corduroy was being woven of cotton and mass-produced in factories in both Europe and the United States.
The fitted Victorian style bodice has a hunter green velvet plastron and yoke. The Victorian style gown's edges are outlined with a green and gold braided trim, plus shiny gold 1/4" round buttons. The Mandarin collar and elegant cuffs are accented with the green and gold braid. 14 gold buttons line down the front; one gold button on each cuff and 4 gold buttons on each pleat at the back peplum of the bodice. The bodice is fully lined.
Condition:
The skirt is constructed of a blue and green plaid pinwale corduroy with a satin and green/gold braid at the hemline. It closes with 2 adjustable skirt hook and eyes, plus one snap. The back of the skirt has box pleats and is slightly trained. The bustle dress overskirt has an draped apron in the front, trimmed with velvet and green/gold braid. The back of the overskirt is bustled with 3 rows of grosgrain ribbons to be tied as desired for a bustled effect. Also trimmed with green and gold braid. The overskirt also closes with 2 adjustable skirt hook and eyes and one snap for ease. All seams are serged, and the hemline is double stitched.
This gown comes with it's own bustle pad! (Has adjustable Velcro fasteners.) Two additional buttons, extra fabric and trim added for accessorizing (possibly a matching hat?). New and unworn.
