1880s Natural Form Evening Dinner Gown Costume by Alethea Sayers
This is a Reproduction 1880s bustle suit, made from authentic patterns of that era. 1880s Evening/Dinner Gown, featuring a non-bustle fantail skirt. Made of a gorgeous vibrant print in Peacock colored brocade and teal taffeta, this dress is stunning! Victorians loved their exotic and colorful birds, the Peacock being very popular and often represented in fashion. This ensemble consists of 3 pieces, skirt, bodice and hairpiece. (Bustle not included) Dress is brand new and never worn.
BODICE: Made of the brocade fabric, with the taffeta inserted in the front, this type of bodice was very flattering due to the cut just above the hips. It sweeps down in the back and creates a tail peplum. The bodice has been flat lined and lined in black cotton, with boning in each seam and front darts. It closes with hook and eye but has very pretty glass type black buttons down the front. There is a short stand up collar, and the sleeves also have taffeta cuffs. A pretty black and gold petite trim highlights the front insert and the cuffs. Just complete the look with your favorite jewelry and perhaps a Peacock fan!
SKIRT: The skirt is called a "fantail"due to the way the training rear sweeps in a rounded fashion. The skirt is made of the brocade and flat lined in black cotton. It has drawstrings on the inside, at the knees in rear to pull the skirt in or let it out. The teal taffeta has been inserted in the back and topped with a teal taffeta bow. The front skirt panels are of the teal taffeta, also lined, with a panel of the brocade overlaid in the front. This skirt does not accommodate your traditional bustle but was of the "Natural Form" era, where volumes of petticoats and lobster tail bustles were often used.
HAIRPIECE: Consists of 4 real iridescent Peacock body feathers. They are wrapped in tiny gold beaded trim. You could add Peacock eye feathers easily. I just didn't have any on hand. This gown is elegant, stylish and tells the admirers that the wearer possesses some wealth. *Please note that I have it pinned to better fit the mannequin's size but true size is listed here. Also, the sun is creating the light spots in the photos.
I never charge a handling fee and my shipping cost for this item is $14.00 for US (based on weight and size), and very reasonable rates for overseas buyers. You must have a physical address for next day Fedex shipping. Overseas buyers should e-mail me for shipping cost.
A short note on the construction of my dresses... I always try to maintain an accurate representation of whatever period I am reproducing. All of my seams are pinked to prevent unraveling. I never use Velcro, fabric glue or zippers on the garments and proper interfacing is always used in the waistbands and collars to prevent rolling. I also adjust my patterns slightly to allow for more upper arm comfort than original patterns of this period provide. If a fabric easily unravels, I flat line each piece with a zig-zag stitch. Buyer pays for priority shipping (based on item's weight and bulk), with insurance and tracking included! All sales are final. I will be happy to answer any questions you might have prior to purchase, and can send more photos upon request. Note: My international shipping rates are very reasonable, with no handling charges but buyers should contact me for a shipping quote prior to purchase.
