Photo 6:This is a really spectacular 1884 dinner gown. Above the Chantilly lace flounce is a panel of pearled lace. The pumpkin orange accordion pleats are long, and precisely thin. To control fullness on the pleats, a silk running thread of backstitched stitches on the inner creases is used about 2" from the bottom hem. Photo 7:This silk bustle gown is from 1885. It has a balloon-like ruche set above 2 layered rows of fine accordion pleats. Both rows of the pleats are controlled halfway by silk backstiches over rolled hems (for weight).
