"The "Luna and Companion - Victorian Masquerade Ball." This gown was inspired by a fashion plate from "La Mode Illustree" from 1880. The layered panel fantail skirt and elongated bodice are made from black taffeta with the skirt fantail inset of embroidered/sequinned taffeta. The gown was beautifully crafted by Lady Leigh and then hand-trimmed by me with many yards of black sequinned alencon lace on the bodice and all skirt layers, buillion fringe on all skirt layers, and box pleated lace at the neckline. I felt like I had truly stepped back in time at the Masquerade Ball!..." JM

"This is the first bustle dress I made and have been hooked ever since. I needed a dress for a Victorian Fashion Show that I was in. I loved finding the fabric of Seafoam and Gold Brocade, pleating the sleeve cuffs and hem line and trimming with yards of perfectly matched braid with tassels and glass beads. There are gold and pearl buttons in the front. Love the flirty bow on my umm bustle..." Miss Janet

Ball Gown Costume

USA Entry 34.) Dress: "Fall in Colorado" Ball Gown
Category: Most Beautiful Ball Gown in the World
Seamstress: JM
Photographer: JM
Model: Kim McNeal
Website: www.theperfecttouchvictorian.com

"The "Fall in Colorado" ball gown was inspired by a fashion plate from Harper's Bazar, 1888. It was also inspired by the beautiful colors of the fall season in Colorado and made for a Victorian Ball at the Durango Heritage Celebration. This was my first attempt at a Victorian gown after many years of not sewing and will forever be my favorite. The underskirt is a caramel velveteen trimmed with a band of fabric of embroidered flowers and wine edging. The overskirt is a sheer fabric of fall leaves design made to flow beautifully while dancing. The bodice base is the caramel velveteen overlaid with the sheer gathered at the front and creating the look of a "Spanish jacket" as it was described in the 1888 fashion plate. Individual embroidered leaves were cut from fabric and overlaid on the velveteen and a band of embroidered wine-colored leaves outlines the jacket. Hand-crafted bows of wine and burnt orange velvet with beaded drapes ending in amber leaf beads trim the bodice shoulders and front, and the overskirt sides and back, and will move and sparkle and make our wearer shine at the Victorian Ball..." USA Entry 33.) Dress: Aqua Wedding Ball Gown
Category: Most Beautiful Ball Gown in the World
Seamstress: AT
Photographer: Catchlight Photography

"Through all the gowns I've made over the years I dreamed of stitching every piece of this ensemble (lace flounced pantaloons/spoon busk corset/chemise/lobster tail bustle/shoes/and 3 piece trained gown). The bamboo pattern of his silk vest is a nod to the Victorian fascination with all things "Japon." In the fall of last year we tied the knot high in the mountains at the 1886 Crescent Hotel and it definitely lived up to my dreams!..." AT
