  • Costume ContestCostume ContestCostume Contest USA Entry 61.) Dress: 1870's Purple Ball Gown

Victorian dress Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Lisa Schnapp: 8/15/2009
"The 1870's Purple Ball Gown (Entry 61) is truly magnificent! Every detail of this Bustle gown costume is executed in exquisite perfection. I don't have enough fingers on my hand to describe this costume's virtues... feminine, authentic-looking to the era, best use of rich (hand dyed) colors, best use of feathers, best train, plus it exhibits and showcases the model's natural loveliness in an elegant, wholesome, gorgeous and magical way, as the best gowns should always do. To narrow it down in one word...Beautiful."
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Alethea Sayers: 8/15/2009
For it's lavish details and rich color. The matching accessories really make this gown stand out.
Victorian Fashion Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Miss Brenda Brown: 8/15/2009
"I love the use of the rich velvet; tassel fringe; feather plumes - all reminiscent of the Victorian era. Lots of work has obviously gone into the construction of this beautiful gown. Nicely done!"
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Cheryl Ritchie: 8/15/2009
"Lovely gown with all of the "bells and whistles" one would expect to find in a vintage Victorian ball gown. Well thought out and beautifully executed."
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Claudette Donat: 8/15/2009
"I selected one dress because I thought it extraordinarily beautiful and her work blew me away. The fact she dyed multiple pieces of fabric to make the dress since she only had a few yards of the velvet also impressed me. I could not help myself on this one. I just love the dress...color, fit, the way she put the thing together, the train and the details. I thought the dress beautiful. She also looks like a gorgeous thing in this dress. I never would think the purple would be the color to look that great. I thought it was put together fabulous and fit...marvelous!"

  • Costume ContestCostume ContestCostume Contest USA Entry 36.) Dress: Wedding and Reception Bustle Gown with flowers

Victorian dress Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Lisa Schnapp: 8/15/2009
"What a winner! (Entry 36) Wedding and Reception Bustle Gown with flowers is all majestic, splendid, and elegance rolled into one costume. The embroidery flowers woven into the iridescent fabric were cleverly thought out and used to advantage. The execution, draped artfully and skillfully. The use of pattern shows the seamstresses understanding of fabric, and skill at turning an idea into magic. The added ball gown bodice looks exactly like the added fashion plate... Just beautiful."
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Alethea Sayers: 8/15/2009
Great use of colors, trimming details. Great matching accessories."
Victorian Fashion Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Miss Brenda Brown: 8/15/2009
"This was one of my favorites! The two different bodices; the buttoned off train and removable overskirt was a very important ensemble for the Victorian lady to have as part of her wardrobe and the fact that the seamstress used this knowledge in designing this dress is very impressive to me. Also, the details of pleated trims, use of brocade and embroidered fabric; tassels; perfectly gathered pleating - all of these details are very impressive. This seamstress deservedly needs a "pat on the back" for attention to her period correctness and talent!"
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Cheryl Ritchie: 8/15/2009
"Absolutely exquisite. Lovely attention to detail. Particularly enjoyed the versatility exhibited by having a second bodice option."
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Claudette Donat: 8/15/2009
"The salmon color dress is exquisite with that really victorian rich color combination. And with the flowers is really beautiful! What a prize for the owner and then an extra bodice as well. Her placement of the flowers must have taken her a lot of time and concentration to get everything....just so. I love the bands of fabric around the mid bustline as in the line drawing. Some beautiful workmanship. The use of the fabric and all her pleats...how wonderful a presentation. A treasure for a bride she said. I say, exquisite."

Victorian dress Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Lisa Schnapp: 8/15/2009
"(Entry 1) B.C. 1877 Madame's Bustle Gown is just a masterpiece to behold. The balance between the black and pink detailing is carefully weighed and executed for best effect, even on the tiniest, intricate details such as the detailed ovals. This gown is a classic. Bold, dramatic, but also feminine, soft and figure enhancing to the lovely model, and full of personality! Simply irresistible! Way to go!"
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Alethea Sayers: 8/15/2009
"Wonderful..."
Victorian Fashion Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Miss Brenda Brown: 8/15/2009
"Loved the idea of the top two oval medallions being functional pockets and a matching dust ruffle. Very pretty, nicely done."
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Cheryl Ritchie: 8/15/2009
"Beautiful gown. Flattering fit and excellent detail."
Victorian gown Costume Contest
Comment by Judge Claudette Donat: 8/15/2009
"She looks really scrumptuous in her 1877 Madame dress. Love her hair and stance and the whole dress is absolutely regal, elegant. I can se her walking in the drawing room at a tea. Her attention to detail and her pleats... what a lot of detailed work. I love this dress especially, just beautiful dress on her. I think she nailed the photo she used as guide for her dress. I think what nails it for me are the number of embroidered motif patterns which she did like in the photo drawings. This fabric is not pre-made, but appliques she machine embroidered each one and edged her lace trim around the motif. That is really exacting detail and placements in each one. She centered her motif patterns, added her trim lace around and so perfectly got each in a position that looks very exact. Accolades for her on her work as all those seams, upper sleeves and areas of concern in these Victorian dresses that fit her figure perfectly. That takes work! Love her color choice. Love the gown in all its' color, execution and I foam at the mouth at her embroidered little insets. FAB..OOOOO...LUSSSS!"

Love the trim and the COLOR ..OMG..who says one should go gentle into the day? This one takes me a prisoner!!! I had to vote for it as it screams...Love the hat, love the parasol ..love that silly, bright screaming lime(?) green and shocking pink. It also looks like a million dollars on our gal, Fannie, there. She was made to wear such a dress and it is perfect for her. She did a great job on the dress...love it!"

The use of coppery-toned browns/ Victorian patterns, top hat, and parasol reminded me of a Victorian adventurer... a female Indiana Jones- Mary Poppins. The model looked amazing wearing this outfit. Had just the right flavor, the right amount of spice, without being too sweet... yet was not too over the top, and stayed exactly Victorian. Comment by Judge Lisa Schnapp: 8/15/2009
"(Entry 55) 1870's inspired Green and Black Silk Ball Gown is wickedly sharp. Delightfully dark. The green hue of the over-pieces contrasts with the black underlayers tastefully, displaying the layered duo tones perfectly. The worked appliques' are magnificent to contrast the simplicity of the lower layers. I particularly enjoyed the hip bustling near the back corset strings. Lovely!"
