This is an especially fabulous and wearable English Edwardian reproduction stage costume gown, coming straight from the collection of the world famous Oxford Playhouse Theatre (Oxford, UK). Their award winning theatrical costume company supplier ended its lease so they decided to sell their stock. I purchased many of the gowns, which are just breathtaking in their uses of high quality fabrics, expert tailoring and often authentic Victorian trims. Many of the gowns were used in famous plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, Pygmallion, Three sisters, and were often worn by world famous actresses such as Judy Dench, Patricia Healey, Sheila Reid and Barbara Murray. Often, these stunning gowns were rented out to the movie sets because of the expert tailoring and magnificent styling details by their prestigious designers. In many of the dresses, if there weren't something tipping me off toward the origin being a costume (and I didn't know where they came from...), I'd almost swear they were the real deal-, the clever use of tailoring's THAT good! The clothing designers spent the effort and made these gowns utterly gorgeous- the best to be had. Beautiful, yet sturdy. This is your chance to own the very finest of costumes- you don't want to miss this one-of-a-kind gown.

This Gibson Girl styled gown was made for the stage production "Arms and the Man" and worn by actress Barbara Murray. It's still good enough today for using in the movies! Especially beautiful and wearable Vintage Victorian style "French" dinner or receiving costume reproduction gown, made to very closely emulate a French gown in quality (high grade and heavy-weight fabrics utilized.)

This utterly magnific purple striped cord raised on mauve-purple silk Edwardian gown has wonderful features...pointed shoulder epaulets is a definite Gibson Girl 1898 style. (Women quit wearing epaulets by 1900.) The faux lavender underblouse is made of a crinkly lavender cotton also seen on the ultra billowy bishop sleeves. Fancy ecru reproduction Art Nouveau flowered lace is overlaid on the under slightly blousen bodice, with a fine silk Georgette cascade of ruffling that's purposely softly faded from pinkish to lavender inside for depth. It has a comfortable high collar, and hooks and snaps down the back. Grape velvet trim lines the lavender ruffled wrists, and there's a stiffened fine grape colored velvet belt. There's a princess lined skirt, with a pointed, "V" line short train with a hand loop to move the train. A true stunner. Props, including hat, necklace, mannequin wig and gloves are not included and are not for sale. This would be the best dress at a reenactment, play, Halloween, ball, dinner, or event like tea- just add plumed hat, gloves, necklace, broach, and parasol, you will be THE Gibson Girl everyone will wonder who her tailor is this spring!

Condition:

Whew! Are you still with me after all that writing? Well, here's very little to tell about the condition, but I'm picky so, here we go... Extra effort was put into making this gown look this terrific! But, since it was worn in production, the gown's not perfect-, but still extremely wearable and most presentable. Gown appears fairly clean. It has been in storage for some years before I received it, so I'm not sure of the exact age. One nearly invisible, tiny mend up on the neck lace (probably from a hook at some point.) and a very slight soiling on inside neck. Hooks and eyes have no rust, and they are all accounted for. Slight purposely faded folds on the front silk cascade from mauve to purplish. Personally, I think this looks charming and gives it a real vintage 'feel' to the silk. There's a few very faint lightening areas on the sleeves, with a small pinkish lipstick mark on the inside of one of the sleeve toward the underarm, so it's almost unnoticeable. Velvet sash has a few gently depressed mark areas as velvet always has when used. There's two tiny well-done and well blended mends on one side near the hem- really not a big deal. These areas are EXTREMELY minor and only noticeable upon very close inspection. Lots of living left in it! I'd I consider this fabulous dress in Excellent Condition, definitely wearable-fabulous!For a very tall, willowy lady, 5'9" to 5'11." It would have to be taken up for someone shorter than 5'9." There's at least 2 full inches it can be let out in the bust and waist. The costumers did this so it could be altered according to the size of the actress. About a size 6, tall.
