Fabulous 1898 PARIS Brocade Ballgown by Madame Marechal PARIS. VERY FANCY
I could imagine a Vanderbilt wearing this wonderful dress during a society ball! I cannot find the words to describe this gorgeous silk satin and taffeta brocade fabric! The background silk satin is a pale celadon green with tiny pink and green brocaded flowers. There are also pink iridescent taffeta stripes (woven like faille) interspersed between the brocade flowers. The "scround" neckline is plunging and low cut, showing quite a bit of decollete.' It has the French corset style bodice and front laces with hand sewn holes. The cap sleeves are have Art Nouveau styled silk-satin stitched silk floral appliques with metallic threads around the sleeve bottom. The same appliques grace the pointed waist. The back of the bodice has curved princess seams in a V shape.

The A line gored skirt is comprised of the same amazing fabric and the simple styling of the period. It fastens with hooks and eyes in the back.

The inside of the bodice is made of a celadon green silk twill with ivory silk taffeta facings and edgings. It is fully boned, with china silk tissue underarm shields. The high quality silk-twilled petersham has fancy, gold stamped writing. "Mme. Marechal, 11 Rue de Babylon n PARIS." The inside of the skirt has a silk tissue celadon green taffeta lining and matching dust ruffle.

Condition:

The overall condition of the dress is just fabulous! The size is great! The outer silk-satin is very strong and the inner lining of the bodice is strong and wearable. However, the inner edgings of the fine tissue silk taffeta of the inside of the bodice is breaking down. This does not affect the wearabillity. There are dark perspiration stains under the dress shields, only under certain lighting conditions can you almost see the very faint darkening spot under one arm on the outside of the dress, there is also a 1 inch slit under 1 arm. There is a thin and faint ballpoint pen mark, which is in the front of the bodice and is one half of an inch long. There is a tiny wear spot at the bottom of the bodice. The appliques need a few stitches at the bottom near the point of the bodice to tack back on. I believe that there was once some organdy trim around the neckline of the bodice which has been taken off. There are a few strings still there which once held it on. Same for the sleeves. One of the edges of the sleeves is a bit frayed in a place about 1 inch long. There is a seam which has become loose about 1 inch long at the front of the bodice and can be re-tacked.

The skirt is also in great condition. The silk is very strong, supple and lustrous. The silk tissue taffeta lining of the skirt, however is breaking down and would need to be replaced to be worn. There is an area where the skirt hooks on the inside where one of the hooks has pulled the fabric so there is a rip there. About 1" inch in size. Also the strip of fabric where this hook is attached will need to be re-connected as it has separated in an area about 3 inches long. The hem of the skirt has some minor dirt and an area in the back where it looks like a crease mark from being folded. There is also 3 brown marks about 1" inch and smaller along this crease. A wonderful find!
