FABULOUS C. 1885 Victorian Young Lady's Embossed velvet Bustle Dress and matching Bonnet
WOW! This is a very lovely and rich young lady's embossed velvet and silk dress with the matching hat! Opulent maroon cut silk velvet in a flower motif and silk-satin are used. The fitted bodice is decorated with 20 original fancy gold and burgundy buttons (top button is missing). Bodice has a long tail, which covers the back of the skirt to enhance the fullness of the bustle. Bodice innards have 7 bones and a self-belt on the inside which closes with 2 hooks and eyes. The front of the bodice comes to a point. The lovely skirt is thick and heavily pleated in the front and has an asymmetrically placed strip of cut velvet in the front as an accent. The small, original bonnet is also made of silk-satin and cut velvet. Amazing to find such pieces together!

Condition:

Condition on this dress is near mint, I think it must only have been worn a few times. All fabrics and innards are very sturdy. The under arms are in good condition. You can see some light wear from the outside, if you lift up the arms and look- mainly where the velvet pile has been rubbed from arm movement. One of the underarms has an inch split on it. There is an area on the inside edge of the bodice near the buttons (not seen from the outside) where the bodice has been clipped to accommodate the curve of the waist, I believe this was intentional due to the small size of the bodice and just thought I'd mention it. The skirt is also in excellent condition, the hemline's clean, waistband closes with a hook and eye and is amazingly sturdy considering the considerable weight of the skirt. The small bonnet/hat is missing its ties I think and is also a bit squashed from storage, and needs to be lightly re-shaped. I think the hat had a lining at one time which is gone now. A very petite size, as if it was made for a teenager or a lady about a size 0-1.
