Victorian 1890's MAGNIFICENT Peach Roses WORTH style Evening Gown Repro Production worn Importance of Being Earnest
This is an especially pretty and wearable English Edwardian reproduction stage costume gown, coming straight from the collection of the world famous Oxford Playhouse Theatre (Oxford, UK). Their award winning theatrical costume company supplier ended its lease, and decided to sell it's stock, so I could purchase many gowns, which are just breathtaking in their uses of higher quality fabrics and wonderful trims. Many of the gowns were used in well known plays like The Importance of Being Earnest and Pygmallion, Three sisters, and were often worn by famous actresses such as Judy Dench and Patricia Healey. Often, they were rented out to the movie sets because of the expert tailoring and magnificent styling by their prestigious designers. In many of the dresses, if there wasn't something tipping me off toward the origin being a costume and I didn't know where they came from, I'd almost swear they were the real deal-, the tailoring's THAT good- they spent the effort and made them utterly gorgeous. This is your chance to own the very finest of costumes- don't miss this dress.
This is an especially beautiful, and wearable Victorian spring or summer reproduction dinner or ball costume gown made to look like a gown of "Worth's" in quality and style, with many of his stylistic effects- striking but simple quality materials, simplistic design, asymmetric effects, side slit opening, and fabric roses!
This particularly stunning WORTH style Victorian gown was used in production and is in excellent condition. Would be great to wear, or for stage since it's very well made, of high grade, heavy-weight, cream cord textured satin, so it's shimmery and not glaringly glossy. The dress is substantial in weight, has many fabric layers. The outer fabric's made to look like heavy silk faille, with satin melon-peach satin lining underneath, meant to be changeable- gleaming cream and then soft melon under different lights to stunning effect. It's very flattering to the skin, making it glowy and soft. Very fitted bodice has a clever asymmetrical sweep of folds to side hip, front princess point, small poufed shoulders, and dainty small pointed rear peplum.
This marvelous, one-piece dress has a 3" wide banded melon-peach satin trimming, overlaid with old looking cream Alecon lace across the low-cut, square decollete' (a wonderful beige, Victorian looking flourished applique' is applied there.) and even edged on the rounded bottom-, all is finished with self melon-peach piping. There's a wonderful hip length split side effect opening to R/H side of skirt, displaying concertina pleated Swiss silk striped underskirt, and a trailing, poly moire' long hip bow with triple loops, with tannish peach and cream acetate and silk organza roses on the side. There's a full rounded train, with fullness concentrated at the rear to accommodate even a larger bustle (like shown), peppered with tiny peachy satin flowers trailing on the back fabric to a rounded train, standing out regally about 2-3 feet from the body. It's as delicious on the inside as on the outside if you can appreciate great workmanship of the artist who made this gown. Back fastening with sturdy hooks and eyes. Fully tailored throughout, with many layers of fabric sandwiched between. Metal boned and heavily lined in melon- peach satin skirt. Serged seams. Chintz and silk lining in bodice, with cotton underarm guards. Professionally finished. Utterly divine.
Props, including bustle, necklace, mannequin wig and feather and fan are not included, and are not for sale. This would be the best dress at a reenactment, play, Halloween, ball, dinner, or event like tea- just add plumed hat, gloves, necklace, broach, and parasol, you will be THE Gibson Girl everyone will wonder who her tailor is this spring!
Condition:
Whew! Are you still here after all that writing? Well, here's very little to tell about the condition, but I'm picky so, here we go... Much effort was put into making this gown look this good! But since it was worn in productions, the gown's not perfect-, but still extremely wearable and most presentable. Shimmery bodice is clean, lightest of the lightest soil on inner liner (guards look clean) One soil pin dot on shoulder, both underarms have a less than 1/4" unfinished point near underarms- not seen unless arms fully lifted toward the sky. Front of skirt has a few light "rubs" (burrs), a possible few extremely faint spots (I'm not finding any but thought I'd offer it anyway, - it would be very surface) Underskirt side slit looks clean. Pleats are neat. On the back and train there are 4-8 tiny (surface) soil spots (see photos), 4-6? slightly deeper wear rubs? with at least 2 of which appear to me to have been from flowers removed in the past, with a few pinholes from needles there. One 1/16" woven mend (they did try to care for their gowns) Hem has dust soiling from the stage. Hooks and eyes have no rust, and they are all there accounted for. The moire' bow has a thread pull, as does the train, little crushing with the vintage roses, looking very good. Extremely minimal stuff- I think this dress could actually be worn as it is, now. Lots of living left in it! I consider this dress Very Excellent Condition, definitely wearable- fabulous!
