Flapper 1920s BEIN JOLIE Wedding Corset with Lace BRA
This is one of the PRETTIEST French style early 20's Art Deco wedding corsets with the built in brassiere I've ever had the opportunity to run across!!! A famous name in corsets, and a serious must have for the corset collector! This wonderful brocaded fabric is extremely sturdy and beautiful, a quality cream brocaded cotton Coutil Brocade Jacquard, with a woven pattern of geometric icy flowers, with a medallion flower lace (camisole type) ORIGINAL bra (backed in net), probably originally made for a spring or summer wedding. This great shaper smoothes in the waist, hips and rear, a la-garcone' style (boy) for a light, full body straightness, but only with a single layer of fabric thickness, (double only on the front panel.), meaning more comfort for warmer weather. There are no true bones throughout (never was) but where bones would have been (boning casing), the casings are sewn stiffly as to have some firm, flexible, comfortable support, but does not cinch down.
There's two triangular panels of coarse elastic on the hips for firmness and a slight give in movement ease. There's a maker's tag in the original lace bra that says, "Bein Jolie Corsette, Made in the USA." On a stylized stamp on the hip, there's the fancy style number, "6231, (Style, and size) 34." Hook and eye side closures. It does not have any adjustment for size (no corset strings), so side darts would be utilized to adjust. Has ivory silk faille grograin straps, and 6 original garters with fancy scrolled metal adjusters. A very high quality corset! Best used or displayed for an average size 6-8.
Condition:
Like I said- this is really wonderful corset. The fabric tensile strength condition is just superb! Wearable without concern, no weakness on it I can determine anywhere. Even the rubber in the soft elastic parts are flexible and in good working order. It's never been cleaned, so it has some faint and small outer surface spotting (a few on hip elastic), a few faint bluish in the lower front and some on the bra. I have no doubt that a pretreat and soak would remove most if not all of this as I feel it is not deeply imbedded. It could also be brought to a cleaners. Where the silk grograin faille straps are, some of the original tan tissue silk casing (?) underneath has either deteriorated or the period ribbon straps were replaced by the owner way-back-when. Some faint rust spots on the garters/ spots, light corrosion on the fancy metal adjusters. I consider this beauty EXCELLENT condition!
