1918-1919 Edwardian Jet gown with Shadow Lace This is a gorgeous 1918-1919 dinner or evening gown that has wonderful details, like handmade (hair fine) silk (flower) shadow lace. Blue and crystal rhinestones on metallic lame' ribbon, Vermicelli beading, jet glass accents and a wonderful beaded waist accent with dangling beads! And in a size 10 too- it could even be worn by a larger bosomed lady (which is usually hard to find.). I was told the gown came from an old Healdsburg, Ca. farmhouse estate. "Mc Clain" is written on the inside in aged blue ink.
This elegant beaded gown was made stylishly modest, possibly for a dinner or evening entertainment (like the opera). The underneath fabric is a very rich and vibrant midnight blue moire.' It was then overlaid with a hair-fine black silk flowered shadow lace (almost Gothic in design). The front low cut decollete' insert is lined in the rhinestones over the fine, beaded Vermicelli, and much assorted jet bead works, plus the fancy dangling applique on the front that is part of a tightly beaded "belt." The waist has become more comfortable and less tightly structured at this period, becoming more tubular as it was transitioning close to the 20's. On the round tea length skirt, there are two short, side hip flaps edged in silk floss thread. The sleeves are 3/4 length. On the inside, there is a cotton linen bodice on the inside with ruffled netting for bust fullness and a thick canvas waistband, but no other lining- as is usually found in the period. It opens from the front and waist side with snaps and hook and eyes. A wonderful gown!
Condition:
This is a fabulous gown that could be gently worn with nearly no effort at all. (You wouldn't want to wear something like this to a strenuous event though- the lace is as fine as an old fashioned hair net.) The moire' outer shell is extremely strong, durable and very evenly colored (I think I might have seen two small spots inside, but couldn't find them again to be positive.) The extra fine silk lace has 4-5 tiny holes overall (my opinion is from being pulled on by hangers, ect.)
