Edwardian 1914-19 HIGH STYLE Metallic LACE Gown This is one of the loveliest and unusual (also by far, the sexiest...) High style, artsy Avant Guard gowns I've ever seen-. It's truly magnificent! The type you see in old French style magazines, and just oozes sex appeal for the period- or any time. This stunning gown has clean, crisp Oriental design lines with deceptively simple, but sharp knockout details. There are also definite French influences, such as the fabulous French Metallic Lace and the scrolled French Roullieux tubing. It's visually stunning, a stunning, single piece gown of apple green with (faint) iridescent tinged undertones of gold and blue in the cotton/ silk blend fine china weave matte fabric. (Feels like more cotton than silk. It is not mercerized cotton.)
Some of the wonderful details include: Thin, shiny, metallic lace straps (sewn on net), asymmetrical bodice covering one half of the bust and the other peeking through with magnificent silver lace (oh my!). Fitted asymmetrical cumberbund waist, asymmetrical dual single sided long sash hip flaps (one side has a flared hip point instead). Scrolled French Roullieux tubing and Oriental influenced clustered (large and small) multi-hued (pink, gold, blue, lavender, raspberry, orange, black) padded silk satin and moire' flowers accents. This elegant full length gown is straight in form with slim legs, a plunging neckline, and large, shining metallic silver thread flowers lace on a daring sheer netted bosom (the lace is definitely cold to the touch and smells like metal.). There was never any other lining or other straps over the bosom which is a daring style point. There's a simply folded modesty neckline, but it is also made of sheer, large honeycomb net. The Oriental influenced silk satin padded flowers have thread knotted interiors, and surround the scrolled self-fabric Roullieux tubing in colorful clusters on one side of the front (a single flower on the asymmetrical bodice). Other than the bodice net, there is no lining in the gown (so it is very lightweight, but curiously not fragile), but there is a heavy canvas corselet belt with many small miniature bones in an upper and lower level alternating "brick laid" style. There's a few letters stamped on one of the firm bones in blue ink ("ens." This writing could originate from the boning company.) I see no other writing. French rolled seams. Closes with silver hook and eyes and snap closures on back. LOVELY! A divine gown!
Condition:
This gown is indeed grand and very strong, and could even be worn or used as a fabulous display. It's a decent size (it could accommodate a larger bustline.) Although the general green coloring is fairly rich and even in tone, it does have some spotting from a vintage spill (see photos). There's tiny/ faint age related tan spotting to the modesty neck piece (that could easily be removed and cleaned.) Surprisingly, the net interior has only a nominal amount of age spots and is in very good condition (minor amount of age yellowing/ underarm spotting.) The silver metal lace is in excellent, hardy condition, being very silvery shiny and only mildly tarnished at the underarms.
