SCARLET red 1880's SILK-SATIN Quilted Bustle Petticoat This is a FABULOUS silk-satin petticoat! It's truly the most vivid shade of scarlet silk- I think this one of the most sexy undergarments I've seen in the era. Its irresistible paired with a corset and low-cut cover. This great item always brings me back to the scene in Gone with the Wind" where Mammy shows Rhett how proud she is of the red petticoat he gave to her. I love this one, because it's quite substantial in texture and weight, and really holds the "correct" shape of a bustle dress more than the filmy, delicate white petticoats, which usually have more fullness at the bottom. It's been expertly quilted (by machine), padded and tailored for warmth, with an adjustable drawstring waist, and has much room in the rear for the bustle. It also has the correct pleating at the bottom of the period. The inside is made of a black and white pin-striped cotton, and has the period correct hem protector of velvet and (correct) strip of coarse cotton sateen. A fabulous and unusual petticoat which came out of a million dollar Kenwood Ca. estate.
Condition:
This petticoat's in unbelievable condition. It's completely wearable- and the color is very even toned and vibrant. On the back where the drawstring and the bustle should be, I see two under 1/4" very faded black felt ink marks, and possibly two silk "burrs" (that aren't really worth mentioning.) On the other side I see a 1/16th of an inch wear hole (the size of a match head.) and two more extra (pinhead sized) tiny burrs (or rubs). There's a (possible) minor mend on the opening "V" joint. The quilting looks excellent. If there's a spot of dirt in there, I can't find it. There's a few very tiny dirt marks on the bottom edge of the pleats and the tiniest wear line on the bottom edge of the silk. On the inside the whitish cotton looks ever so slightly mellowed with a few (pinhead-sized) age related spots. That's it. I consider this fancy undergarment NEAR MINT.
