BEADED Victorian Wedding shoes with SILK ties by Rosenthal's
This is a stunning pair of unusually and heavily beaded Victorian fancy white plonget leather wedding shoes. Made by "Rosenthals's" shoes (tags on both shoes in black and gold) which was a famous maker in San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles at the time. There's a facsimile on the tag as their trademark- of a winged Griffin with a Victorian woman's head, holding a Victorian button up shoe. This is the second pair I've had, and the other pair is the iridescent plum beaded boots. I'd say the era was between 1880's-1910. "Opal" micro beads heavily decorate oval hand cut and hand sewn "flower" cutouts- which also have round, faceted jet hand cut beads. There's a triple silk-satin "angel wing" row of bows. These are all surrounded by micro pink, iridescent opal beads and a few rows of black beads in the centers. There is very fine silk (taffeta weave) ties that tie over the foot, leather inners and a fabulous curvy "Louis" spool heel. The ties appear original or at least era original. These stylish shoes were definitely the most beautifully decorated footwear in her armoire.

Condition:

I consider these pretty shoes strong enough for wearing, BUT I would bring them to an old fashioned shoe maker first to make sure the back seams are reenforced, as one looks as though it is just beginning to separate. (Thread gets old- and there's evidence there was the pressure of heel guards- now gone- as the Maker's tags are very thick, and sturdy. I think they probably rubbed heels.) This also caused slight "folded" indentations at the tops of both heels where the guards would have been. There's also light wearing wrinkles in a few places, but nothing distracting. They're so lovely, I could also see this pair in a museum. The beads appear strongly sewn on and supple and not weak, with minimal lossage on each toe (about 4-6 micro beads and one jet bead each, probably happening when they were originally worn, leaving miniscule pinpricks there.)(Please see photos).

One toe has a pinhead sized dent scuff. There's about 4-6? very small and faint scuffs or small spots. (You have to see photos.) Overall there's very little age yellowing, but there is the tiniest amount as I believe the shoes were cleaned and gently polished many, many years ago possibly. Both shoes have a decorative thread rim around the openings, and I see a few age spots, and areas where the extra fine threads have been slightly damaged. One of the ties is a little loose where it's sewn on and will need to be reenforced if worn. The insides are in strong, wearable condition, with "glue" remnants of the heel guards, pinholes on both of the outsides where I think the guards were originally pressed on, and discoloration on each of the leather soles (Usually when I find leather soles like this, they are dried too, and usually unusable so I consider this very minor.) Leather soles are stamped "Philadelphia" and have seen moderate wear. Remnants of original or very old tags are under one of the soles. The leather soles have seen some wear, but have much life left. These great shoes can be cleaned due to the finish treatment. A competent old-time shoemaker should be able to fix the scuffs and extra light wear if desired. I know you won't be disappointed!
