1890s-1910 Victorian- Edwardian Suede and leather walking boots- LARGE Size
This is a great pair of fabulous two-toned tan and black Victorian- Edwardian walking boots (my personal opinion is that this particular pair dates around 1895) in a rare but wearable size 9-10 wide! Made by "H. Jantzen Shoe Co." shoes (black and gold tag) which was a famous maker in New York at the time. Two toned boots were always more sought after by wealthy women than the single colors- unless they were a novelty color or beaded. These great boots were extremely well made, and expensive at the time. Thick leather uppers have round but slightly pointed and reenforced toes. Tan suede uppers have matching laces. The insides have strong, clean canvas inners and a fabulous curvy "Louis" spool heel.

The brown boot ties with metal tips match, are strong, usable and original. These stylish boots were definitely the most usable and suitable footwear for day in her armoire.

Condition:

I consider these boots strong and hardy enough for wearing. They have very few problems, but since I'm picky, they sound a bit more involved than they actually are. The sueded leather is very strong, and I only see a few faint, very light spots on each shoe that possibly may be able to be cleaned or brushed out. (One is very close to the black edge and may be leftover blackening from an old polishing. The other is about 1" round near the same area and is very slightly pinkish.) The black shoe leather is good with a couple of thin scrapes on the slightly curled up toes, an eraser-head sized light gauge (see photos) with 2-3 small, thin scrapes on the sides, and a dime sized rub scrape on one heel that's pretty inconsequential. I think a good polishing would probably take care of 99% of this. Moderate wear on both leather soles but has much life left, and is stamped with the maker's name. There's a few 1/4" areas at the edges that have curled ever so slightly, and I think could be extremely easy to deal with. These boots cannot be cleaned on the outside due to the finish treatment. A competent old-time shoemaker should be able to fix the light scuffs and minimal wear if desired. I know you won't be disappointed!
