Rare and Fabulous PLUM Victorian 1887-1889 Renaissance corset Bustle bodice with metallic appliques.
Personally, I feel that this is one of the most magnificent and unusual Victorian bodices I've ever seen- and it's definitely not a costume. I believe it was custom made for a spring dinner event. As you can see from the photos, the plum brocaded silk is richly colored, lustrous and strong (the plum leans toward pink, not blue.). The pattern motif is very clever. At first glance, the pattern appears to be spinning balls, cats eye marbles or worlds, but I've concluded that the balls are actually opening seeds!

You see, in some of the seeds there are flowers forming and the great flower appliques are the fully formed flowers- which also suggests that this terrific, slightly padded, expertly tailored bodice was most likely worn in the spring. The modesty lace around the neck is scalloped hand-made bobbin lace with three original plum silk gro-grain adjustment ties. The bustle bodice is fully and firmly boned like a corset, with tall whalebones and busc (No metal) in fabulous condition. Handmade holes line the front with the original corset strings ending in long brass tips. Fabulous Art Nouveau styled metallic thread appliques of flowers and leaves encircle the neckline and again as closures on the sleeves where the arm cutouts come together with more of the same clusters at the wrists. The cutouts expose fine ivory silk crepe inserts. The innards are tan twilled, polished cotton. Seams are hand and machine sewn, french seamed and painstakingly bound with extra fine carnation pink silk that's hand sewn and amazingly in grand condition. This was one of my prized bodices in my personal collection for nearly 15 years! The hardy Petersham interwoven white and back chevroned canvas, with brass closures, firmly sewn on- no rust. A dream of a bodice!
