Victorian 1880 Purple printed Tea Gown pleated flounce Bustle Dress
This is an uncommonly lovely, feminine gown! The elaborate, flounced, pleated ruffles have comfortable, but elegant styling with a very pretty fabric, straight out of the old west. This is a fancy, late midday, dainty tea gown (with an unfitted, unboned, wrapper style bodice as most house gown or tea gowns do), worn in the fall time, with a soft, purple-pink- tan and bluish Victorian flowery leaf design in cool, mercerized cotton. This what the graceful lady of the house would've worn when visitors came to call, or even a quick trip out on the street. This is such a splendid gown! The bodice front and back falls in softly gathered pleats to the waist, with a self fabric, lace edged jabot at the neck and tailors pads at the upper shoulders. All the fabric edges have pretty, re embroidered lace, except for the bottom hem, which I'm positive would have been a bad idea to have it there for walking- lace there would have been dirty and caught on everything. There are pretty, ball shaped, purplish buttons down the front with hand sewn buttonholes, straight, full sleeves, the front apron gathered stylistically upon one hip. The back bustling cascades down the back. 3 rows of lavish, pleated ruffles tier down the front- the flounced, pleated ruffles really swish and move as the gown is moved around. I think this would be a magnificent display gown or to wear as it's very strong, if you were inclined. About a size 4.
Condition:
It's very strong as I said, so it could be displayed or worn with a worry. There's only a few extremely tiny holes (about size of match head) I found once, and couldn't find again on the skirt somewhere, (EXTREMELY minor.) with a few tiny lace breaks around wrists/ neck, and a few tint spots on lace at jabot. The print has an allover, extremely gentle fade throughout the tones (you can only tell if you lift the front draped apron- most people wouldn't realize to mention. Underarms have a bit of minor mix of colors on the outside with a few tiny rust spots under one that nearly is invisible, due to the busy Victorian pattern. Light soiling on inside white cotton dust ruffle, and minor soiling inside white cotton bodice. Bust darts may not be original, but they might have been added for fit too... Jabot may/may not be original- looks good either way anyway. Original buttons had been repainted the original color (I was told) by a previous owner. I believe it is strong enough it could withstand dry cleaning if you desire to do so although I do not believe it really needs it- I would not hand wash it as the colors may not be colorfast in liquid as many early gowns are. At least 2" could be let out in the bodice sides. Make sure to add at least 1/2" movement room to your current measurements (do not go by bra size!) One of the best printed bustle dresses- ever. Made for a mid height, short waisted, smaller sized lady with broad shoulders and a small- mid sized bust.
