Victorian 1890's MAGNIFICENT WORTH style Gown and HAT Repro Designed by Jean Lamprell. Worn by Shelia Reid in the Man Woman of Chaillot This is an especially fabulous and wearable English Edwardian reproduction stage costume gown, coming straight from the collection of the world famous Oxford Playhouse Theatre (Oxford, UK). Their award winning theatrical costume company supplier ended its lease so they decided to sell their stock. I purchased many gowns, which are just breathtaking in their uses of high quality fabrics, expert tailoring and often Victorian trims. Many of the gowns were used in famous plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, Pygmallion, Three sisters, and were often worn by world famous actresses such as Judy Dench, Patricia Healey, and Sheila Reid. Often, these stunning gowns were rented out to the movie sets because of the expert tailoring and magnificent styling details by their prestigious designers. In many of the dresses, if there weren't something tipping me off toward the origin being a costume (and I didn't know where they came from), I'd almost swear they were the real deal-, the tailoring's THAT good- they spent the effort and made them utterly gorgeous- the very best. This is your chance to own the very finest of costumes- you don't want to miss this gown.
Designed by the famous English theatre clothing designer, Jean Lamprell for Miss Sheila Reid, worn in a production of Man Woman of Chaillot and good enough today for the movies! Especially beautiful and wearable Vintage Victorian "French" dinner or ball costume reproduction gown, made to very closely emulate a French gown of "Worth's" in quality (high grade and heavy-weight) and style, with many of Charles Worth's renown stylistic effects seen here. Such as the striking, but simple midnight black velvet striped, wide wale (high velvet pile) cotton/ silk blend velvet (stripes were an often used favorite of Worth's), simplistic "V" plunging decollete' bodice design (the example I show is a similar example.), and divine asymmetric effects such as the shiny iridescent vintage sateen mauve/violet, sparkly glittery spot (not sequined, kind of a flat glitter) waterfall sash with a large, boned (stand-up) hem bow.
This very figure flattering gown is heavily and firmly boned, fitted and perfectly tailored/ interlined (many layers of fabric sandwiched between) like a couture gown in the exactingly nipped in princess seamed bodice (made to appear like two pieces) with a grograin inner waistband and perfectly finished along the edges. You wouldn't need to wear a corset unless you desired to... The skirt is fuller in the rear for the bustle, oblong sweep along the bottom edge, almost round, as to not trip over a train- but be graceful. The skirt is fully underlined in black, soft cotton linen. Hook and eye closure, heavy duty snaps on skirt. Tag with maker's name and actresses' name neatly typed on it. One of the best I've ever had and boy, I do mean it! : D Just scrumptious.
Tiny bonnet/ hat with black faux coque millinery bird is included in this auction. Made of the striped velvet with black flowery chemical lace edging. There's beaded jet sequined net around the crown. Faux millenary bird of black, shimmering iridescent violet and green is on a field of green net. Streaming back bow. Maker's tag inside. stunner. Props, including bustle, necklace, mannequin wig and gloves are not included and are not for sale. This would be the best dress at a reenactment, play, Halloween, ball, dinner, or event like tea- just add plumed hat, gloves, necklace, broach, and parasol, you will be THE Gibson Girl everyone will wonder who her tailor is this spring!
Condition:
Whew! Are you still with me after all that writing? Well, here's very little to tell about the condition, but I'm picky so, here we go... Extra effort was put into making this gown look this terrific! But, since it was worn in production, the gown's not perfect-, but still extremely wearable and most presentable. Gown appears clean, without smells or stains. Hooks and eyes have no rust, and they are all accounted for. Sash has a few gently faded areas where the purple appears (lighter) mauve in a few folds, (seeming to be made this way). A few of the glitter "sequins" (for lack of what else to name the glittery spots) are missing. These areas are EXTREMELY minor and only noticeable upon very close inspection. Lots of living left in it! I consider this dress NEAR MINT Condition, definitely wearable-fabulous!
Price is: $325
