1880s FANCY Cut VELVET Opera Dolman with Jet and silk Chenille
I just love this fancy Gothic Opera Dolman (which is like a fancy cape with an area for the arms to give it shape)! It has a bunch of wonderful elements- a heavy weight but airy silk-brocade novelty weave fabric with interwoven large flowers of thick, plush silk velvet that's as black as midnight, extra long lappets lined with heavy weight mommie black silk-satin, ending in extremely heavy, grograin-silk-satin bows, jet bead squares and lots of fabulous silk chenille fringe!I also have to mention the romantic, loose cap which reminds me of the Meryl Streep scene in The French Lieutenants Woman, and the short back to show off a prominent bustle.

Condition:

>Except for some fading to the coat (as seen in photos provided) on part of the sleeves and at the lower sides---condition on this rare coat is quite good- even wearable. I believe the fading could restored by a textile expert. There are a few very small moth holes that had been mended at some time. There is some minor feather loss to the front of the coat, mostly covered when hooked closed. There are a few small dirt spots at the hem and a few areas on one shoulder where there is some loss to the top of the pile of the fabric an area of the left shoulder and the back area- these are small random areas. No underarm damage. The silk satin lining is in excellent condition as well. I think I found one nearly invisible 1" mend in the silk.
