Regal Garnet 1892 Victorian Velvet and Silk Satin RECEPTION Gown with LACE This is such a beautiful and regal reception gown, I don't know where to begin about its great style! The color on the silk satin is a very rich garnet with sleeve inserts of thick pile garnet velvet on a cotton base. There's stunning silk Oriental flower embroidery on the bodice and waist. On the tops of the shoulders, there are caps that are gathered of the self fabric silk satin. On the front hooking bodice, there are insertions of the prettiest ivory embroidered lace in a scroll and flower pattern that is just gorgeous! The bodice is very fitted and has a lovely revers that is the garnet silk on one side and the lace on the other- very regal! The peplum on the rear bodice is a widely pleated one that stands out nicely from the body as was the 1890's fashions. The skirt has princess lines, with a large insert of the wonderful garnet velvet, 2 side bands of velvet and much gathered fullness in the bustle area to accommodate a medium sized bustle. The gown's interiors are made of tan twilled cotton.
Condition:
This is one of the most beautiful gowns out there- a real "A" list beauty, but has some lining issues, so today, this gown is best as a display, restoration (it could be MOSTLY restored to perfect, and at the very least, restored to be easily wearable.) or as pattern, parts or study although I feel there's much more life in this gown. If you replaced the bodice inner lining and repaired the waistband of the skirt, everything else would be very minimal.
The outer silk satin and velvet is strong enough to be worn but the inner bodice linings are weak, and have tears at the shoulders and bottoms and should be replaced for wearing. (See all photos- photo 2 shows the concerns). Skirt lining is good except for the dust guard (doesn't affect anything) and the inside waistband lining and outer waistband have a tear and was lengthened way back when. Bodice bones and darts were removed from the bodice interior to expand the waist many years ago, and there is underarm stains that do go through and are moderate in color, but since the fabric is dark does not distract badly. One hook has torn off, but it is still attached. There are a few spots on the silk and the lace, but nothing distracting. The side silk velvet bands need to be tacked in a few minor areas, and the velvet sleeves have velvet pile "balding" wear at creases that show the cotton base, and there's wear areas also on the elbows- but no holes or weakness- just pile wear.
Price is: $425
